Root Canal TreatmentClinical information

Endodontics treats conditions affecting the dental pulp — the inner tissue containing nerves and blood vessels — and tissues surrounding the roots.

Why may it be needed?

Deep decay, fracture or trauma can infect the pulp. Root canal treatment removes infected tissue, disinfects and seals the canal system.

Control infection

Remove the source of inflammation inside the tooth.

Preserve the tooth

Avoid extraction when treatment is suitable.

Restore function

Reinforce the tooth with a restoration or crown.

Signs requiring assessment

  • Persistent pain or pain when chewing;
  • Prolonged hot or cold sensitivity;
  • Tooth darkening;
  • Swelling or a gum fistula;
  • Trauma or fracture.

These signs do not confirm the need for root canal treatment. Diagnosis requires clinical and radiographic assessment.
